Regardless of your age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or status in life, you are welcome to join this community of faith by the members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The ELCA is an engaged, active body of people who put faith in God into action – in millions of ways, all over the world. Join us!
The ELCA was formed more than 35 years ago. This new church was formed from three separate and well-established North American church bodies: the American Lutheran Church, the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and the Lutheran Church in America. Beginning January 1, 1988, these churches, with shared beliefs and missions, officially formed the ELCA. More than three decades later, this energized church is composed of more than 3.3 million members and 8,900 congregations across the US and Caribbean (as of December 2020). Today, the ELCA reflects the rich and diverse heritage of the people it serves.
As stated on the "ELCA Facts" page of ELCA.org, "The ELCA is committed to making the world a more just and peaceful place to live. Through programs, ministries and partnerships ELCA congregations, synods and the churchwide organization work every day to address inequities in political, economic and social systems and to end conflict and violence all over the world. We are a church that believes God is calling us into the world – together. This is Christ’s church. There is a place for you here."
